Biography

The Finn Erik Rousi is known for his powerful, yet at the same time beautiful bass-baritone voice. He has a wide repertoire ranging from baroque and lied music to heavy German operatic literature. Rousi’s vocal technique has been hailed as “sovereign” and “accomplished,” while his interpretations have received praise as “ extremely strong” and “filling the room with energy and warmth”.

Rousi’s operatic repertoire include roles as Rocco (Beethoven: Fidelio), Raimondo (Donizetti: Lucia di Lammermoor), Melisso (Händel: Alcina), Le Roi (Massenet: Cendrillon), Nettuno (Monteverdi: Il ritorno d’Ulisse in patria), Caronte (Monteverdi: L’Orfeo), Colas (Mozart: Bastien und Bastienne), Don Alfonso (Mozart: Così fan tutte), Il Commendatore (Mozart: Don Giovanni), Figaro (Mozart: Le nozze di Figaro), Lautsprecher (Ullmann: Der Kaiser von Atlantis), Daland (Wagner: Der fliegende Holländer) and Kaspar (Weber: Der Freischütz).

On the latter part of the season 2019/2020 he will add Sparafucile (Verdi: Rigoletto) and Hunding (Wagner: Die Walküre, 1st act concertante) to his repertoire. The season 2020/2021 is offering very interesting new challenges to Mr. Rousi, as he tackles the core bass-baritone repertoire, with roles as Tonio (Leoncavallo: Pagliacci), Der Holländer (Wagner: Der fliegende Holländer) and Wotan (Wagner: Die Walküre, 2nd act concertante).
Erik Rousi is also a concert singer and frequent interpret of Lied music, with his focus on the great cycles of F. Schubert, which he has performed on numerous occasions all around Europe. During the season 2019/2020 Rousi is expanding his concert repertoire with works like: Ich habe genug (Bach), An die ferne geliebte (Beethoven), Christus am Ölberge (Beethoven), Mass in C major (Beethoven), Unohdetut sankarit (Kyllönen) and Requiem (Mozart).
Despite his young age, Mr. Rousi had already a change of working with some wonderful artists, such as Christian von Götz, Dietrich Hilsdorf, Peter Konwitchny, Gustav Kuhn, Niels Muus, Adrian Sylveen and Ariel Zuckermann, to name a few.

Rousi has studied at the Music and Arts University of the City of Vienna under the guidance of Prof. KS. Angelika Kirchschlager (MA/2018) and at the Helsinki Metropolia University of Applied Sciences (BA/2016) with Prof. Seppo Ruohonen and Prof. Marjut Hannula. Lately he has been working on the heavier bass-baritone repertoire with the renowned Finnish singer Juha Uusitalo.
Alongside his singing duties Erik is also working as the artistic director of two festivals in Finland.
